Product Data︰ | CAS number 8007-18-9 EINECS number 232-353-3 Description nickel titanium yellow, (Ti,Sb,Ni)O2 Colour Index Pigment Yellow 53 / 77 788 Chemical nature Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 is a practically insoluble rutile pigment based on nickel[II]/antimony[V]/titanium dioxide. Nickel[II] oxide, the chromatic component, and antimony pentoxide for balancing the valency, are absorbed by the rutile lattice of this product. The heavy metal oxides thus lose their chemical, physical and physiological properties. The toxicological and ecological properties therefore correspond largely to those of titanium dioxide rutile. The acid-soluble antimony content is less than 20 mg/kg. The doped rutile pigment should not be regarded as an antimony compound that must be labeled as a dangerous substance. Toxicology In animal studies, nickel titanium yellow pigments did not display acute toxicity. Feeding tests on rats to determine the chronic toxicity revealed no toxicological finding whatever. No acute irritant effect was shown in tests to determine the acute irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. Extreme exposure to dust may lead to a brief irritation of the eyes by mechanical influence. No allergic reactions have been reported, even after handling nickel titanium yellow for many years. Ecology Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 does not represent any hazard for the environment owing to its inert, practically insoluble character. The pigment can be removed mechanically from effluents. If it is dumped on a controlled dumpsite, dissolved heavy metals are not given off to the seepage water. If articles colored with Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 are incinerated, the pigment is recovered in the original form in the residual ash. Water hazard classification WGK 0, no hazard to waters (VwVwS of May 17, 1999, annex 3) Heavy metal contents Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 contains approximately 3 % of nickel and 10– 11 % of antimony. The pigment does not contain any lead, cadmium, chromium[VI] and mercury compounds in the formulation. The sum of the total contents of these elements, according to tests on standard samples, is less than 100 mg/kg. It is thus below the limit in the EU packaging directives, the American CONEG model and the EU end-of live vehicles directives 2000/53/EC. The average values for the total contents of technically unavoidable impurities are as follows: arsenic < 20 mg/kg lead 60 mg/kg cadmium < 5 mg/kg mercury < 1 mg/kg chromium < 50 mg/kg selenium < 1 mg/kg cobalt < 10 mg/kg zinc < 100 mg/kg Halogen content Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 does not contain any halogens in its formulation. TA-Luft para 3.1.4 – class II (nickel, antimony) (Germany) MAK value General threshold for dust, 3 mg/m³ (alveolar-passing dust fraction – TGRS 900) (Germany) According to tests on standard samples, Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 meets the purity requirements of the following food legislations (Type 8081) (also see Heavy metal contents): Europe Resolution AP (89) I Germany BfR Recommendation IX, 190th information of June 1, 1994 Italy Decreto Ministeriale of March 21, 1973 Spain Resolucion del April 11, 1982 de la Subsecretaria de Sanidad France listed in the French positive list (Brochure No. 1227) Food legislation USA listed in the FDA positive list (21 CFR, § 178. 3297). Toys According to tests on standard samples, Sicotan® Yellow K 1011 meets the purity requirements of the European standard on children’s toys, EN 71, part 3 (Typ 8082).
